When we start talking serious biology, any question about the purpose of some aspect of structure or behaviour of a living organism (and yes, that does include you and me) must ultimately refer to the overall goal of long-term reproductive success.
    This is because that is the only type of purpose that can be scientifically explained, given our current understanding of life and the universe that it lives in.
